Charlie's Country
(M)
The third film collaboration between Rolf de Heer (Ten Canoes, The Tracker) and David Gulpilil, Charlie’s Country follows an ageing Indigenous man as he ‘goes bush’ to lead a more traditional life.
Co-written by de Heer and Gulpilil, Charlie’s Country – served up in typical de Heer style – pulls no punches in highlighting the everyday hardship and bigoted attitudes facing the Indigenous men and women of rural Australia.
What’s more for his portrayal of Charlie, Gulpilil won a ‘Best Actor’ award at the Cannes Film Festival, and the screening received a standing ovation.
